A Beginners Guide to German Kitchens in 2022

Are you curious about what makes a German kitchen so special? Keen to learn what the main benefits to going German are? Look no further. Here's our 5 key points on why German kitchens are a step above the rest:

1. Bigger Base Units

Carcass Heights
XL German carcases offer 10% more storage than UK units

This first one is pretty straightforward, but to get specific:

UK kitchen units are typically around 720mm high and are built on a plinth height of 150mm, making a standing unit of around 870mm in total height (before your worktop is added)

German kitchen units however are larger than this (792mm in the Nobilia collection for instance) and take a smaller plinth height of 100mm, for a total build height of 892mm (again excluding worktop thickness)

Still with me? Good.

This means that even though the overall height isn't much larger, our German kitchen units offer around 10% more storage space than the average UK unit does. Bigger equals better!

The larger carcase also offers a more comfortable user experience for slightly taller individuals.

From a design perspective, the smaller plinth height on German kitchens helps them look sleeker and more streamlined than UK units too (this is what creates that famous 'floating' look on kitchen islands!)

2. A Huge Choice in Unit Sizes

A fantastic selection of unit heights offer real design flexibility

While most kitchen manufacturers have a reasonable selection of unit heights available, German kitchens take this to the next level.

For example, our 2022 Nobilia collection offers:

• 5 different base unit heights

• 5 different midi/tall unit heights

• 5 different wall unit heights

All as standard.

This fantastic selection of unit sizes means a German kitchen will always have the right unit to suit your home, helping you maximise the use of your space without the need to pay extra for custom unit height adjustments.

Speaking of unit sizes....

3. They're Highly Ergonomic

Function is at the heart of German kitchen design, and the huge selection of unit heights mentioned above is about much, much more than just maximising storage space.

Because German kitchens are built on an incremental grid system, it's possible to raise or lower certain areas of a design to make it more accessible or comfortable to work in (i.e. ergonomic), without upsetting the visual effect of the design.

Here's a good example of this using our Nobilia Touch 332 Range, with certain work areas (and appliances) planned at a height to suit the specific user. Notice how the fronts all still line up?:

4. Rigid Built Units - No Flatpack Here!

If you enjoy getting into the nitty-gritty then this one's for you:

All our German kitchen units are delivered pre-assembled & rigid-built with a 'glued & dowelled' construction, unlike UK cabinets that typically use a flat-packed 'cam & dowell' build system.

Thanks to the rigid crossbar framework, the back panel on German kitchen units need lend no serious structural rigidity, making them both stronger and lighter than UK units. This is especially true if you ever need to remove the back panel from a unit (under the sink, for example)

German units arriving pre-built also helps save your installer time during the fitting process (saving you money) as not only do they arrive perfectly assembled, but the doors are hung and the drawers are inserted too, meaning all that's left to do is add the feet and handles before the unit is ready to install. German efficiency at it's finest!

Additionally, thanks to the extra large feet that German kitchens use they're super sturdy when installed. Each individual foot on our Nobilia kitchen units can support a whopping 50kg of weight!

5. Design, Design, Design

Finally, the one you've all been waiting for! Drum roll please.....German kitchens are trendsetters in the global kitchen design market.

This means they're leaders, not followers.

It's worth reading that last sentence again.

If you're looking for timeless kitchen design, there's nowhere better to be than a specialist German dealership.

This is particularly true when it comes to German Handleless Kitchens - the minimalist 'Bauhaus' inspired design style is unmistakeable, and nobody (in our humble opinion) does it better.

We're not alone in this belief either - our Nobilia German kitchens have been awarded time and again for their quality and style.

UK manufacturers do take inspiration from this success, but it can take years for the German style trends to filter down into British showrooms. So why wait?
